Sportband Display Gone Bad

I have only had my Sportband for a couple of weeks and logged about 35 miles to it. I noticed after a 6 mile run on Thursday that there was a bit of condensation buildup underneath the screen (it's been HUMID in Dallas!)
On Friday I look at my watch and the display is all messed up. There is essentially what amounts to a "black line" through the middle of the display and at the bottom. It still functions just fine, but I can barely make out any of the numbers because of this.
Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions as to what I could do, or should I just take it back?

Exact same thing for me, too. Noticed it had 2 tiny drops in it one day; the next the top third of the screen went black. Called Nike, they're replacing it, but it means I won't have one in the interim.
Bad design. Period. I love the way it works, but it gets absolutely soaked just from sweat or humidity (as might be expected) and isn't sealed properly. Maybe no one at Nike actually tested it for more than a few minutes so it couldn't get really wet.

Totally agree. Mine got a tiny amount of condensation in it, then the screen went completely black a few hours later. It then gave up the ghost entirely, and has never come back to life. I returned it to the shop, who havce replaced it, but now the new sportband won't recognise my account.

So this is obviously fairly common. I would imagine that we aren't the only 3 people to sweat while wearing this watch...how is everyone not dealing with the same thing?

Hi all,
I'm sorry to hear that the Nike+ SportBand has been a disappointment; it's always a bummer to take home a fun new piece of gear and find that it doesn't meet your expectations.
I'm perusing the one-year limited warranty, which is really your best source of information about water resistance and other product specifications. Here's what the warranty has to say:
"Water resistance: IPX-7 can be immersed in one meter of water for 30 minutes
ATTENTION: Water damage may occur if the buttons are pressed underwater.
ATTENTION: Hot steam may cause damage to the product. Do not wear in steaming shower, spa, or hot tub."
Given what you've described, it sounds like your best bet is to return your SportBand, as VitaminG413 and dingdong have done. We definitely want you to get the advertised performance out of your SportBand. If you're seeing condensation and other display problems after brief exposure to incidental moisture, the SportBand isn't performing as it should. OpenIntro, I'm hopeful that this is a relatively unusual occurrence, and that a replacement SportBand won't suffer from similar issues. We've tested these extensively, and what you're experiencing is pretty unusual.
Dingdong, when you get a new SportBand, it won't automatically recognize your account. You'll need to record and upload a run, and you'll need to follow the prompt in the Nike+ Utility to visit nikeplus.com. Once you launch nikeplus.com in a new browser window, you should see a link you can click to "log in." You'll want to click that link and enter your existing login information; once you've taken that step, your Nike + Utility should automatically send your workout data to the proper Nike+ account.
I hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to give us a call if you have other questions or concerns about your SportBand. We're here from 7 a.m.-3:50 p.m. PT, and you can reach us at 1-800-379-6453. You can also e-mail our team at nikeplus@nike.com. We're happy to help.
Cheers,
Clover

I've had my Nike+ for 2 weeks now and went for a 8.6km run on Sunday evening. Came home, checked my stats on the Sportband without uploading the run and went to bed.
Then yesterday (Monday) evening I went for another run only to realise that the SportBand display was completely malfunctioning. I was unable to decipher anything it said. All I could make out were some faint dash line where the digits should be which blinked unclearly whenever I tried to cycle through the various settings. Totally dismayed I didn't know what had happened and assumed their was a fault with the device. Somehow though I was still able to upload my previous 2 runs so the SportBand was evidently still working despite the display.
I have some pretty ambitious goals and training on my Nike+ website at the moment for the next several weeks, so, reluctant to compromise them I tried going for my scheduled run. Fortunately, I guessed the correct button combination since the run succeeded in being uploaded when I got back home. Surfing the net I stumbled upon this thread and was not looking forward to replacing my Sportband as this would mean and instant fail for my goals and training.
Two options presented themselves: 1. Try and make a claim against the product gaurantee, or 2. buy a new one today so that my goals and training wouldn't be affected. Neither were very appealing.
As a last ditch effort I left my SportBand in my hot press room overnight to see if it would do any good. By now I could see some condensation under the display screen building up around the edges.
Great news! It worked! Somehow this morning when I went to check on it the display was back to normal as if the incident had never happened. I don't normally participate in forum discussions but hopefully this will be of some help to anybody else whose encountering a similar problem with their SportBand. I can relate to how frustrating it feels, but, now I just can't wait to start running again.
Good luck!

I appreciate the comments. Trust me, I'm not giving up on the Sportband as I had high hopes for it and I LOVED using it. Regardless of it being water resistant, I just wouldn't test it and keep it under water. But the watch HAS to be able to cope with sweat and humid conditions, and I would expect that Nike would have tested this. Maybe this one was just defective and not sealed properly.
The store I bought it from is replacing it (when they get new ones in stock this week), but in the meantime I am continuing to use it to keep track of my runs until I get the new one. It's interesting because I am running and not able to pay attention to the display, which is good at times....not a distraction and I just get it done
This will now be my third Sportband (first one had a bleeding display on day 1, and second obviously had screen issues as described) so here's to the third one being a charm!

Well, I'm getting down on Nike+ and the SB in particular. After the first one crapped out on me (top 1/3 of the screen went black), I spoke to the Nike rep who said he was going to send me a new one and a shipping label for the return (that way, I wouldn't have to go too long without the SB). Well, the label arrived, but no replacement did. In the meantime, I purchased a new SB at my Fleet Feet store, figuring I could give the replacement to my girlfriend for her birthday.
87.31 miles later and, this morning, there is a lattice of the LCD material spread out over the left side of the screen. It still worked for my 15-miler (had to do it in the heat to get to 2000 miles on Nike+), but it was hard to see the left part of the screen.
Since I purchased it, it has not rained a drop here in TN. I have been careful to dry the SB immediately after each run. And, yet, it has failed me. Again. I love the idea of the product, I love the way it works, but I am not impressed so far with its failure rate. Obviously, after 2000 miles, I'm not yet going to quit on Nike+, but it would be nice if the product(s) worked a little more consistently.
I'm going to call my local store when it opens (it's Sunday morning) to ask about replacing it - but ultimately it's Nike's responsibility to produce a product that doesn't fail so readily, especially when used only under the conditions for which it was designed (presumably).

Hi Clover,
I guess hot humid days like what we're having here in NYC just aren't compatible with the SportBand??? My screen is now dead too after watching moisture condensation slowly creep across my screen after 2 long runs. It still works, just no screen.

I have the same issue. Last night while running, I was caught in a downpour and this morning, the display was dead. Guess I will be calling Road Runner Sports for a replacement?! The unit should be much more resistant to rain than this!

It's obviously a problem, and one that Nike is looking into due to what I would presume would be quite a few defective returns.
The good news is that this very useful tool is relatively inexpensive (in comparison to watches like the Garmin Forerunner) and we are fairly early adopters. I was told that the Sportband is a fairly limited release at the moment. Only a couple of stores in Texas have them, and they only have received a couple of shipments of 25-30 at a time. I called another local running store in Dallas to see if they were stocking them, and they told me that they wouldn't be stocking them until Nike had worked out the kinks....so they obviously know that there are things to be worked on.

I got similar stories both from my local running store and the Nike+ rep I talked to about the 2nd failure. The Nike rep told me how this was Generation 1 of the product and they're learning a lot from the heavy use it's getting from some people (though I don't really consider an average of an hour a day, six days a week to be "heavy use"). I'm okay with that provided they told us it would be flawed AND if they agree to upgrade the Gen. 1 folks to the next generation for a small (or no) fee.
I have spent a lot of time trying to get my 2 SBs to work (I'm now on my third), not to mention two trips to my store (15 miles away, so that's about 3-4 gallons of gas) and 1 to the Post Office to return the first. I wish Nike had tested the SB a bit more vigorously instead of letting us do the work for them - they seemed eager to get it out there (note its appearances on the Gouchers and Bernard Lagat on the covers of Runners World and Running Times) for prime running season without worrying too much about how well it would work under sustained use, or in large numbers (maybe quality control is also an issue).
And, just because a product is Generation 1 doesn't mean it can't work properly.
Here's hoping they either upgrade the quality control or roll out a second generation that addresses our concerns (and let us in on it).

Sorry,
Just wanted to let you guys know that my SB's went completely black 2 days after I thought that I had managed to fix it. Didn't want to ruin my goals waiting for a response from Nike so just bought a new one there at the weekend. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with it. Just for the record: it was raining on Sunday evening and I like running in the rain so I decided to do so. Ran for 8km and have run another 4km since then and display still seems to be in perfect condition. I know I'm in Ireland but the weather is very humid here at the moment by Irish standards so hopefully my second SB works out better than the first.
Slan!

Exact same thing on my first one - top 1/3 of the screen went black, the next day it looked fine, but as soon as I took it out for a run, the whole thing faded out for a while, before resuming having the top 1/3 out.
Hope the second one works better (mine didn't).
