Arien O'Connell won! She had the best time and got screwed out of her prize just because she wasn't seeded as an "elite" runner. By that logic, the elites are the only runners who matter, and the rest of us don't stand a chance. The runner with the BEST TIME should win. PERIOD.

Yeah, I agree, it is time for Nike to clarify the rules that prevented the fastest finisher from winning.

I am so disgusted by this situation with Arien. I so feel her pain, why was she considered to blame for her improving by 11 minutes on her marathon Personal Record and subsequently WINNING? It was a great run for her and she should have reaped the benefits. Nike is showcasing their disinterest in the average runner; obviously Arien at this point is beyond average but what she stands for is a NON-elite classified runner who was able to exceed even her own expectations. This is great PR for Nike, they should have used this opportunity of a successful NON-elite athlete as a way to encourage other runners to succeed like Arien did. Instead they are shunning and almost punishing athletes for not being registered in an appropriate wave of runners. This is just another reason to be disenchanted with the sport. This is a true disappointment.

I've read in a Facebook group that Nike will be changing the winners to reflect the actual winners (and getting rid of this ridiculous notion of elite runners) - if this is true, let's see the update in the blog.

Let's not be too hard on the Nike organizers of this fantastic event and the virtual half that went on simultaneously. The rules that govern road racing are not established by Nike. USAT&F is the governing body and it is that organization's delay in dealing with the advent of the timing chip, the growth in road racing outside the "elite" field, and the explosion of running events around the world that has led to this situation. I know many Nike employees who are supportive of female runners and are always looking for ways to promote and encourage running to the non-elite. Don't forget that the Nike+ system helped to grow the use of iPods by some many runners who just head out on their own every day to get in their run--much to the chagrin of race directors and race officials everywhere who want to ban iPod use in all situations, not just at road races. I imagine that there is lots of internal conversation at Nike about what happened on Sunday.

USAT&F insists that because of records that have stood pre-chip timing, because many races don't use chip timing (not anymore), and because of the possibility that a runner will start back in the pack and "sneak" up on the leaders that the "official" time for the purpose of awards must be based on gun rather than net time. All of us who have helped grow running in this country should let the governing body know that it is time to reconsider these rules. There must be a solution. Don't forget that Prefontaine was a thorn in the side of racing's governing body when he was competing.

The 2008 Nike's Women's Marathon in San Francisco reminds me of the Men's Basketball Final Game at the 1972 Olympics (Look it up.). As John McEnroe would say: "You have GOT to be kidding me!" Last time I noticed, in the world of track and field, the BEST TIME wins the race. Arien McConnell ran the fastest race, finishing 10 minutes and 54 seconds before the "elite" field's fastest runner's time. And any justification offered by Tanya Lopez and Jim Estes for McConnell's not receiving the trophy is simply spinning the issue.

Hi there,

Nike is announcing today that it recognizes Arien O'Connell as a winner in last weekend’s Nike Women’s Marathon with the fastest chip time, completing the full race in 2:55:11. She shattered her previous time and achieved an amazing accomplishment.

Arien will receive the same recognition and prize, including a Tiffany & Co. bowl, the full marathon elite group winner received. Arien was unfortunately not immediately recognized as a race winner because she did not start the race with the elite running group, which is required by USATF standards. Because of their earlier start time, the runners in the elite group had no knowledge of the outstanding race Arien was running and could not adjust their strategies accordingly.

Learning from the unique experience in this year’s race, Nike has decided today to eliminate the elite running group from future Nike Women's Marathons. Next year, all runners will run in the same group and all will be eligible to win.

Nike has a proven track record of supporting athletes and we’re proud to be able to honor Arien and other athletes who surpass their goals and achieve great accomplishments.

the first one to cross to the finish line means first place regardless of which category you were listed.

the first one to cross the finish line means first place regardless of the category. Even though Arien won Nike is not posting any of her photos on the website as a winner.
That's amazing that Nike will not recognize her milestone achievement. Arien beat the elite runners without a 20 min. lead.

Arien should be recognized on the nike marathon website as the winner......and not just as "a winner." Mistakes happen, yes, but give a girl her due! "Non-elite" runners like me are inspired by Arien's accomplishment. You would think that Nike officials would get that ....... Just imagine how much Nike profits would plummet if non-elite runners decided to support/wear other brands.

All runners should be congratulated for their extraordinary efforts but the person who won SHOULD WIN! What a shame. Arien O'Connell was obviously THE winner.

NIKE you suck, ok that is harsh, but you did the teacher wrong. Please fix it or I will pitch my Nike products. I can not believe that you are to proud to make a change. Its not like this O'connell is a professional runner. I mean it was not even close. I won't wear my nike shoes anymore if you don't do the right thing and over turn your decision. That is ridiculous. There are plenty of other marathons to support and I really like my saucony's.

Arien O'Connell won this race. Are you out of your mind Nike? Get a clue. If you don't do more than declare her "a" winner you will lose my business for good.
